Overview
Unilam Pressings is a leading steel-components manufacturer with a large factory in southern Johannesburg. Repeated vandalism of grid infrastructure forced the operation to rely on diesel generators at a cost of hundreds of thousands of US dollars per year. The solar-plus-storage system was designed to lower energy cost when the grid is available and reduce generator use during frequent outages.
Client Request

01.     Provide fast transfer for a 340 kVA industrial load.

02.     Support 12 hours of operation without the grid and with minimal diesel-generator assistance.

03.     Reduce peak and standard-time grid energy use by 90% when the grid is available.

04.      Integrate automatic generator start and stop.

Project Solution

—     Solar array — 660 kWp

—     PCS + MPPT — 500 kW

—     Battery system — 1,505 kWh (768 V / 280 Ah × 7 sets)

—     Diesel genset — 800 kVA
